"Low Intensity Skill Routines?"
This type of drill has been around for ages in some form or another, but I didn’t fully appreciate them until 2015.
At the time, I was playing with the Minnesota Twins and I had the chance to watch pro coaches like Ron Washington using these drills with their infielders before the games.
Watching them reminded me of the times when I was a kid, and I used to bounce a tennis ball off a wall for hours and hours.
But the pros take it to another level.
Every routine has a purpose. They understand exactly what they're trying to accomplish, so every rep is getting them closer to their goals.
I realized what a game changer it was for an infielder to be able to get up to 30 reps per minute in a small space, without taxing their body.
So these drills became a regular part of my routine for the rest of my career.
During season, I would do them to activate my eyes and hands - before full length ground balls.
Or to stay sharp in between games.
In the off season, cold weather didn't stop me any more. I was able to keep improving and prepare for the spring - no matter where I was, even when there was snow outside.
Basically any time I didn't have a field and fungo hitter at my disposal (as most of us don't), these Low Intensity Skill Routines were my go-to. And they were an absolute game changer.

In a nutshell...
Doug Bernier debuted in the Major Leagues in 2008 at 2nd base for the Colorado Rockies, and after that played for 5 organizations...
...over 16 professional seasons.
Doug has played every position on the field at the Major League level except for catcher, and is proficient at second base, shortstop, and third base.
His defensive stats ranked at the top of the league nearly every year, with a career .971 fielding average over sixteen seasons.
As the Defensive Coordinator, he's tasked with setting the fielding and baserunning expectations, planning defensive workouts during spring training, and overseeing all infield, outfield and baserunning development, from Rookie ball all the way up to AAA.
In 2024, Doug was promoted to Field Coordinator for the CO Rockies, while still retaining his Infield Coordinator responsibilities.
After retiring from playing, Doug began to work for his home team in Denver Colorado, the Colorado Rockies.
He spent 2 years as a Pro Scout, and then 2 years as the Major League Game Planning Coordinator.
In 2022, Doug became the Minor League Defensive Coordinator for the Colorado Rockies.
In the off seasons, Doug runs the infield program at local youth baseball facility. There he coordinates the defensive development for competitive baseball teams ranging in age from age 8 to 15 years old.
Doug and his wife Sarah founded Pro Baseball Insider.com in 2012 as a way for professional baseball players to share their knowledge & experience with passionate players, parents and coaches all around the world.
They live with their 3 daughters near Denver, Colorado.
